Abstract

Mefenamic acid (Ponstel), 250 mg four times a day, and placebo were compared in a double-blind, crossover study conducted in 46 women with primary spasmodic dysmenorrhea. When compared with placebo, treatment with mefenamic acid resulted in significant decreases in the frequency and severity of the symptoms, and significantly reduced the need for additional analgesic medication. Mefenamic acid was well tolerated. No changes in clinical laboratory values were associated with its use. (<i>JAMA</i>241:2713-2716, 1979)
