This paper presents a new development in on-line transient stability assessment and control using a hybrid extended equal area criterion (EEAC) method. By integrating the EEAC method into a fast time-domain simulation program, a transient energy margin based performance index can be formulated to give a quantitative measure on the system stability, and hence to derive the necessary generation rescheduling for avoiding instability. The proposed method has been tested on a realistic 20-generator 100-bus 256-branch reduced UK system with promising results.
