A new model for predicting the 1/f (flicker) frequency noise in quartz resonators as a function of the unloaded resonator quality factor Q and volume under the electrodes for bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators is presented. The functional form of this model originates from a quantum 1/f theory for scattering of phonons from the primary oscillator mode. Using this new model, it is possible to match the 1/f frequency noise observed in the best quartz-controlled oscillators and resonators. This model indicates that the amplitude of 1/f frequency noise might be improved by making resonators with smaller electrodes.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
