The validation of the thermal step method, which makes it possible to determine the electric field and the space charge distributions in insulating materials, is described. Validation was done by testing the numerical treatment, and then by depositing real corona charges in a well-localized zone of the sample. Other validation techniques, such as thermal step inversion and the simulation of the measured current from calculated space charges, are also addressed.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
