The threat behaviour in Varanus griseus was investigated with high‐speed cinematography and X‐ray films. Lizards exhibit threat display involving throat movements and associated throat, thorax and mouth movements. The functional anatomy of the bucco‐pharyngeal region is described and threat displays are kinematically studied and functionally interpreted.
