The tritopic hexa-aza-macrocycle (1) binds three CuII ions in solution and leads in particular to the assembly of a trinuclear bis-µ3-hydroxo bridged complex whose crystal structure has been determined; it may be considered as a cryptate of a cationic cluster [Cu3(OH)2]4+ held inside the macrocyclic cavity of the ligand.
