Further support of some findings about the characteristics of smokers and nonsmokers.

A group of 125 male college students and a 2nd group of 120 were surveyed by means of a 270-item true-false inventory and a factual biographical questionnaire to determine differences between smokers and nonsmokers. It was found that smokers 1) were significantly higher on the MMPI Pd scale and lower in the Sr scale; 2) were significantly more oriented feeling that what happens to them is dependent on chance rather than their own behavior; 3) have lower MMPI L and Si scores; 4) were significantly associated with consumption of beer and coffee but not with milk or soft drinks; and 5) attend church less often were more frequently Roman Catholics were graduates of private schools and belonged to social fraternities more often than nonsmokers. These findings support previously reported descriptions of personality traits of smokers.
