On Permutations to Block Triangular Form

Abstract

This note clarifies some points relating to the permutation of a matrix to block triangular form. In particular, the block triangular form of any matrix which may be permuted to have a zero-free diagonal is shown to be unique apart from certain well-defined trivial permutations.
