Abstract

Understanding of the design trades associated with the use of fluidic aircraft controls is developed through the design of a model scale gas turbine powered flapless flight control demonstrator aircraft. Theory relevant to the design of an integrated propulsion, pneumatic power supply and fluidic flight control system are reviewed, focusing on the trim of longitudinal forces and moments. The integration of a propulsion system with fluid flight controls is shown to introduce design couplings not present for aircraft that use flapped flight controls. This introduces specific design issues due to lack of availability of pitch and roll control authority during low thrust flight conditions. The benefits of a flapless design based on fluidic flight controls need to be balanced against the disadvantages of increased complexity and weight.
