Abstract

The concept of equilibrium, like Emerson's concept of compensation, has fascinating applications in many fields where processes of change may be interpreted as deflections of a moving system by external forces and the counteracting influence of restoring forces that return the system to its normal state or course. This article investigates the evidence for the existence of restoring forces which appear to maintain competition between the major parties in American politics.
