Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy is becoming a more commonplace procedure as the demand for more cost-effective and patient-effective means of breast diagnosis increases. A new biopsy device, the mammotome, has been introduced that uses vacuum and a tissue transport mechanism so that multiple samples can be obtained with one insertion in contradistinction to previous percutaneous biopsy methods, which required multiple insertions. To use the mammotome with ultrasound guidance, it is attached to an articulated arm that stabilizes the mammotome housing during the biopsy. The mammotome should make ultrasound-guided breast biopsy less time consuming, more accurate, and more acceptable to those performing the procedure and those ordering the procedure.
