Records of damage resulting from earthquakes show several cases in which failure or severe damage has been induced in earth dams and embankments, located off the fault zone, as a result of the ground vibrations produced by the earthquake. The design of such structures to safely withstand the destructive effects of earthquake ground motions therefore constitutes an important problem in seismically active regions of the world.
