We describe a hyperthermophilic archaebacterium, Hyperthermus butylicus gen. nov., sp. nov., that was isolated from flat-sea sediments. This organism is the first extremophilic archaebacterium for which fermentation products have been identified. The type strain is strain DSM 5456.
