Abstract

There was no statistical correlation between pocket probing depth of the mandible incisor and salivary IgA concentration in pilocarpine‐stimulated whole saliva in ODU plaque‐susceptible (Sus) rats which were susceptible to plaque formation on the lower incisor region and exhibited gingivitis. However, there was a highly significant negative correlation between the pocket probing depth and the amount of pilocarpine‐stimulated saliva (r=−0.728, p<0.01). These findings suggest that the amount of saliva may play a role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease while salivary IgA is likely to be of less significance.
