Explicit relationships between the controllable decision variables and known initial conditions and the resulting states of combined stream‐aquifer systems are established through a set of coefficients referred to as influence coefficients. The discrete kernel approach for an isolated aquifer is combined with the discrete kernel approach for an isolated stream to derive the influence coefficients for a combined stream‐aquifer system. The isolated aquifer and the stream are coupled using a linear relationship for the stream‐aquifer interaction. The explicit nature of the relationships defining the state variables is well suited for the formulation of optimization type management problems as mathematical programing problems.
