Our present knowledge of fetal circulation and the alterations that take place at birth are based upon anatomical studies and experimental investigations in animals, which until recently have not included study of the human fetus. Barclay, Franklin and Prichard's angiocardiographic investigation of the circulation in the fetal lamb before and after delivery is considered to be one of the most important contributions to the study of fetal circulation (1944).
