Abstract

NUMEROUS experiments have been conducted to establish the theory of gene control through gene induction and repression in bacteria (Jacob and Monod, 1959; Monod and Cohen-Bazire, 1953). Using a model for control of gene activity proposed by Jacob and Monad (1959), genes can be classified as structural, operator, or regulator. The structural genes code for a specific messenger RNA (MRNA) which acts as a template for synthesis of a specific protein. The operator genes control the initiation of the MRNA transcription from the structural genes. The function of the regulator gene is to synthesize a repressor substance, which controls the functioning of the operator gene. The regulator genes are in turn controlled by chemical substances from the external or internal environment of the cell.
