Longitudinal Neuropsychological Follow-Up Study of Patients With First-Episode Schizophrenia

Abstract

Patients with schizophrenia have considerable cognitive dysfunction in the first 4 to 5 years of illness, which is stable at a level of 1 to 2 standard deviations below that of comparison subjects. There is little evidence for deterioration of cognitive abilities over the first few years of illness, with the exception of verbal memory, which shows significantly less improvement in patients over time relative to that of comparison subjects.
