Summary The bactericidal action of normal serum was found to require the presence of a substance which may be regarded as antibody. In the absence of antibody, normal serum was lacking in bactericidal action despite the presence of the properdin system. In the presence of antibody, properdin may augment the bactericidal titer of normal serum to a slight degree. Moreover, the bactericidal action of properdin is extremely slight compared to antibody and is difficult to demonstrate. Finally, the experimental findings leading to the concept that homologous antibody may interfere with bactericidal action of normal serum attributed to properdin were not confirmed.
