The ability to perform PCR directly in the presence of detergents greatly reduces the number of steps involved in sample preparation and, therefore, reduces the risk of producing false positives. In order to facilitate the development of simplified PCR preparation techniques, we have determined minimal inhibitory concentrations of commonly used ionic and nonionic detergents on a standard Taq polymerase assay
