AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECTS OF PROLONGED VESICO‐URETERIC REFLUX ¹

Abstract

SUMMARY A series of experiments have been undertaken in dogs to determine the effects on the upper urinary tract of prolonged vesico‐ureteric reflux. Reflux was successfully produced in all ureters except one by resecting the mucosal flap valve guarding the ureteric orifices. One dog died of acute pyelonephritis which was probably ascending in origin. No evidence of infection was found in the upper urinary tracts of four dogs surviving for periods of up to two years after operation. Considerable alteration in peristaltic activity in all the ureters in which reflux was present was found. This consisted of failure of the normal peristaltic response to increased bladder volume and pressure.
