Changes in the O—H stretching frequency of protic solvents and in the proton resonance shifts for O—H protons provide useful measures of the extent and strength of hydrogen bonding with basic aprotic solvents, B. Similar changes in these parameters are induced by anions. We show that shifts induced by anions correlate well with those induced by solvents, B, and hence we conclude that the hydrogen-bonding description of anion solvation by protic solvents is both satisfactory and useful.
