The short fiber content of raw cotton is important to yarn manufacturers, but current measurement methods are slow and may not accurately characterize short fibers. The Peyer Fibroliner-AL101 system is a relatively easy and rapid method of determining the length-frequency distribution of cotton samples. A comparison between Suter- Webb and Peyer fiber length distributions by weight (barbe) indicates that barbe 25% length is approximately 0.10 inch shorter than Suter-Webb upper quartile length, and the mean length is approximately 0.05 inch shorter than the Suter-Webb mean length. The barbe percent fibers shorter than ½ inch averaged 1.70% greater than the Suter- Webb percent short fibers. The Peyer Fibroliner-Almeter test can be performed in approximately 15 minutes, while it takes about two hours to make the Suter- Webb test.
