A new receiver structure is proposed that employs maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) on a sequence of T/2-spaced samples for systems having at most 100% excess bandwidth. A fixed analog filter is implemented in the proposed receiver that is matched to the transmitted pulse instead of the received pulse. A noise-whitening matched filter is also implemented in the receiver, having a fixed structure that is independent of the unknown channel. It is shown that the performance of the proposed receiver is identical to a conventional MLSE receiver and is insensitive to the sampler timing phase. The new receiver is suitable for rapidly time-variant channels.
