Abstract Substrate binding to the Cu(II)–Gd(III) heterometal complex of N,N′-bis(3-carboxysalicylidene)ethylenediamine was studied in N,N-dimethylformamide. It was suggested that substrates with a nitrogenous and an oxygenous groups (amino alcohols, 8-quinolinol, amino acids, and amino acid esters) were specifically bound to the Cu(II)–Gd(III) center, with the nitrogen to the copper and with the oxygen to the gadolinium.
