The drive to increase the productivity of social workers in large public-sector agencies has contributed to an erosion of certain craft elements of practice. The functions of workers are becoming increasingly repetitive and mechanistic, and opportunities to exercise judgment or to develop specific skills are becoming limited. These trends have contributed to a weakening of the profession's historic commitment to social change and the poor.
