The impact of the anion on the assembly of extended 2D structures has been demonstrated by two distinct luminescent 2D lattices. Shown here is the macrocyclic cloverleaf-shaped cavity obtained from the reaction of a starburst ligand with Ag(NO3). Use of the triflate salt instead results in a honeycomb-shaped cavity.
