Abstract On the basis of (a) a spherical Fermi surface and (b) Halse's Fermi surface of silver, calculations are presented showing the importance of the polarization properties of extraordinary cyclotron waves propagating through metallic samples. In particular, it turns out that the longitudinal component of the electric field of the cyclotron wave in general is non‐negligible. An attempt at a physical description of the large damping observed at the “turning points” of the dispersion curve is given and an example of a comparison between experimental results and a calculated dispersion curve is presented.
