Abstract

Plane landings on the ice pack between latitudes 73° and 76°N, and between longitudes 135° and 150°W, allowed several geophysical studies to be made in an area unexplored since Storkerson's sled trip in 1918. Sonic soundings indicated ocean depths between 3400 and 3800 m. Measurements of the direction of ice movement correlated well with surface isobaric contours. Gravity‐meter operations showed these studies to be feasible on the ice and indicated maximum vertical ice movements of about 0.05 cm in the period range five to 40 sec.
