This paper investigates the effectiveness of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and proposes a quantitative measure of MPPT efficiency. Using a vector methodology to track the direction and path of the sun throughout the day, the optimal solar tracking angle and angle of incidence of the sun's rays are derived. The solar array's output power is monitored, under sunny sky conditions, with and without the use of maximum power point tracking in order to study the difference in efficiencies and to quantify the benefits of maximum power point tracking. The paper presents results for the efficiency of MPPT under fixed horizontal solar panel conditions and optimal solar tracking
