Abstract One of the most important problems in the practical application of optical transmission systems is to evaluate the reliability of the fiber in optical cable. This paper discusses reliability assurance by screening test, which is the most effective method for reliability evaluation of optical fiber strength. the condition for reliability assurance is discussed, considering the effect of such environments as water and of temperature, time‐varying strain and the distribution of strain along the longitudinal direction of the fiber. the parameters used in representing the strength distribution and fatigue characteristics of the optical fiber, which are needed in the reliability assurance, are quantitatively evaluated based on various kinds of test data. Through discussion of the permissible failure probability of the optical fiber which is required in reliability assurance of the optical transmission system, the condition for the screening test is stated.
