Abstract

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is an uncommon idiopathic noninflammatory nonatherosclerotic angiopathy that occurs in young to middle-aged individuals and more frequently in women. It consists of abnormalities of smooth muscle and fibrous and elastic tissue, affecting small- to medium-sized vessels. It has been demonstrated in almost every vascular bed, but renal arteries are most commonly involved (60 to 75%), followed by the cervicocranial arteries (25 to 30%).1 FMD leads to arterial narrowing, and clinical manifestations include hypertension and stroke.2 Although FMD is a pathology diagnosis, most often it is made by conventional angiography.
