α-Amino phosphonic acids, analogues of α-amino carboxylic acids, are of interest because of their potential biological activity. The title reaction makes possible the preparation of (easily separated) diastereomers, which can be saponified to give penicillamine analogues (RC(CH3)2OCH3).
