Abstract

When an extract of thyroid gland was added to LATS-containing sera from different thyrotoxic patients the degree of neutralization varied for the different sera, and was not related to the LATS content. When a thyrotoxic serum, negative for LATS, was added to a dilution of a highly potent LATS serum the neutralization of the LATS by the thyroid extract was inhibited, indicating the existence of an interfering agent, for which the name LATS protector is suggested. LATS protector was present in the gamma globulin fraction of the serum. It was not found in globulin concentrates of the sera from euthyroid people, nor in the sera of 4 patients with myxedema. LATS protector was found in a greater proportion of thyrotoxic sera than was LATS.
