Abstract A novel and green approach has been described for the synthesis of 2,3‐dihydro‐1 H ‐1,5‐benzodiazepines from o ‐phenylenediamines and ketones using cerium(III) chloride/sodium iodide supported on silica gel under mild and heterogeneous conditions. The reactions are carried out at room temperature without using any organic solvent.
