In this paper, we explore a wireless body area sensor network (WBASN) based on ZigBee technology. All nodes in the WBASN are organized with star topology, and sensor nodes are managed by a central control node. Moreover, the central control node is used as an access point by which the biomedical signal from sensor nodes can be transferred to hospital network over mobile communication network. The WBASN works in a mode named "wake up on-demand" which means the WBASN is set in a sleep mode where most circuits are turn off and fewer circuits keep monitoring the wireless channels at low power consumption. Once the WBASN is waked up, all modules begin to work and all biomedical signals are obtained, stored and transmitted. The design of the WBASN is to provide "a future-proofed" scheme which can be optimized by modifying the software so as to keep up with the development of mobile communication technology.
