Abstract Three methods were used to estimate total numbers of fishes in sections of a small, sluggish, silt-bottomed stream. Estimates obtained by electrofishing with multiple run depletion were more reliable than those based on collections with either rotenone or explosives. It appeared that sampling efficiency of explosives (primacord) was hampered by soft bottom substrates.
