Abstract This work presents a predictive direct torque control method for matrix converters fed permanent magnet synchronous machine drives. A new look‐up table for direct torque control using matrix converters has been developed. The new look‐up table delivers a set of three different vectors, every sample period, that fulfil the torque and flux demands. Based on a predictive algorithm, the voltage vector from the matrix converter ensuring the minimum torque ripple is selected. The system predicts the torque error for each of the three voltage vectors and selects the one that contributes with the minimum error. Simulation and experimental results, which confirm the good performance of the proposed predictive direct torque control using matrix converters are shown.
