Abstract

Ultrasound B-scans of the knee joint and upper calf region were performed in transverse and sagittal planes. Baker's cysts and peripheral oedema each produce a characteristic echographic pattern which can be distinguished from the normal pattern. Ultrasound thus affords a simple, rapid, non-invasive technique for distinguishing between thrombophlebitis and irritation or rupture of a Baker's cyst.
