Pure silicon building blocks in solution are an exciting addition to the repertoire of the materials science of Group 14 elements. The preparation of the complex [{Ni(CO)2}2(μ-Si9)2]8− shows that rational synthetic transformations with the Si94− Zintl ion are feasible.
