Fatal Air Embolism in an Adolescent with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy during Harrington Instrumentation

Fatal air embolism can occur during a variety of surgical procedures (1,2). However, it has not been previously associated with the complications of Harrington instrumentation (3,4). We report a fatal outcome from this complication and suggest that other reported untoward outcomes may have been due to a similar pathologic process.
