Concrete bridge structures are affected by corrosion resulting from exposure to deicing salts. Theoretical models exist which describe the ingress of chlorides and subsequent corrosion. However, the data required by these theoretical models are not routinely available. As part of the new Midlands Links risk-based repair strategy, an empirical corrosion model has been developed which aims to give accurate predictions of corrosion losses. The model can take account of information relating to the spatial variation of corrosion and can also be used to predict areas of delamination resulting from the build-up of corrosion products on reinforcing bars. From the Midlands Links corrosion model, a more general corrosion model has been proposed for wider application. This model would provide information on the relative risk from corrosion in a population of concrete structures.
