The hydrogenation of methyl acetoacetate to give optically pure methyl 3-hydroxybutyrate is performed hetero-geneously with high activity and enantioselectivity under mild reaction conditions due to the combination of Brønsted acid and Ru–binap sites in a polydimethylsiloxane membrane matrix.
