Abstract

Hydrolyses of dissolved combined amino acids in seawater with 6 N HCl result in oxidative degradation of α ‐amino acids when seawater nitrate concentrations exceed 6 ± 2 µ mol liter −1 . The addition of excess ascorbic acid before hydrolysis prevents these oxidative reactions.
