For setting appropriate respiratory conditions to fit each patient who is receiving artificial respiration treatment, it is very important to build a respiratory model of lung that describes the dynamics of respiration. In this paper, a new respiratory model is proposed, which is a second order nonlinear differential equation with elastic and resistive coefficients described by polynomials of pulmonary volume. The model is able to describe the nonlinear dynamics of respiration. By using the numerical integration technique of Sagara et al., a continuous-time identification model is derived. Then, off-line arid on-line parameter estimation algorithms are presented. The proposed model and the parameter estimation method are validated by real clinical data.
