Abstract A state's maritime zones are measured from the baseline, normally from the lowwater line. Straight baselines may be drawn only in localities where the coastline is deeply indented or fringed with islands. This article sets forth the official U.S. position on the rules for the drawing of baselines. The practice of Asia-Pacific states in establishing straight baselines is examined in light of these rules. Keywords: Asia-pacific;Straight Baselines
