The level of serum proteinbound iodine (PBI) was assessed in a series of 389 individuals, of whom 311 were euthyroid, 41 were hyperthyroid and 37 were hypothyroid. Diagnostic limits are described where possible. It is shown that the PBI concentration is a very useful criterion in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism but is not very reliable in the diagnosis of doubtful hyperthyroid states.
