Abstract Effects of macromolecular orientation on the crystallization of preoriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) filaments were studied. Infrared spectrophotometry and differential scanning calorimetry analyses showed that macromolecular segments in the trans conformation begin to crystallize below the glass transition temperature. Since filaments prepared by stretching at room temperature have different degrees of orientation, it is possible to evidence correlations between crystallization from an anisotropic matrix and the resulting morphology.
