A linear stability analysis which accounts for the effect of non-Newtonian viscosity is developed. This analysis is used to predict the wavelength of ligaments shed from a liquid sheet by predicting the wavelength of the fastest traveling wave on the sheet surface. The results of this analysis are compared to experiments conducted on liquid sheets formed by impinging jets. In each case, the linear stability analysis overpredicts the wavelength of shed ligaments. There are two possible reasons for this. First, shorter wavelength impact waves emanating from the point of impingement may control the process of sheet destruction. Second, the linear stability analysis fails to include the effect of viscoelasticity which is evident in these fluids.
