Monte Carlo inversion of Australian Rayleigh wave data indicates the presence of a well-defined channel of low shear velocity in the upper mantle beneath eastern Australia centred at a depth of about 130 km, and the absence of a similar structure beneath the shield area of central and western Australia. The results of the inversion are in general agreement with other geophysical data concerning the upper mantle beneath Australia.
